Special Studies - Revelation Chapter 21
Dear FATHER, Please Bless our Study of THY WORD! In JESUS' NAME, Amen!
The New Heaven and the New Earth, and The New Jerusalem
The seventh trumpet has sounded, the thousand year period of THE LORD’S DAY (Millennium) has passed, and all those who did not make the resurrection have gone into the lake of FIRE. Now we are going to cover the new Heaven and the new earth.
Revelation 21:1 And I saw a new G2537 heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
[
Note:
The word “new” in this sense means rejuvenated. Not so much in the sense of being young, but more so in the sense of being fresh.
G2537
καινός
kainos
kahee-nos'
Of uncertain affinity; new (especially in freshness; while G3501 is properly so with respect to age): - new.
The way that it is written in the Greek language, and therefore translated into the English language is that the first heaven and the first earth were passed away. This is a function of the Greek language. It does not mean the first heaven and the first earth in terms of numbers. The first heaven and the first earth are indicative of the heaven and the earth before the new heaven and earth.
From our perspective, it means the second heaven and earth have passed away, which is the age we are currently in. There are three heaven ages and three earth ages. The first heaven and earth in this verse are the heaven and earth just before or prior to the new heaven and earth. It’s put back into the state it was in before it became corrupted. There are no more oceans covering the land. The new earth can accommodate the space required to support all of the people.
]
Revelation 21:2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
[
Note:
This happens after THE LORD’S DAY. Remember that John was taken to THE LORD’S DAY. He was told to write the things he had seen before THE LORD’S DAY, the things which are on THE LORD’S DAY, and the things which shall be after THE LORD’S DAY. The things in this chapter are the things which happen after THE LORD’S DAY.
Revelation 1:10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,
Revelation 1:19 Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;
]
Revelation 21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
[
Note:
The word SHEKINAH in the Hebrew language means: “GOD is there”. This is called THE SHEKINAH Glory, and it means GOD’S Presence.
GOD will dwell with HIS people (Ammi means MY people, as it is written in Hosea 2:1):
(Hosea 2:1) Say ye unto your brethren, Ammi; and to your sisters, Ruhamah.
"Ammi" means "MY people" and "Ruhamah" means loved. It was LoAmmi and LoRuhamah, which meant "not MY people" and "not love", but no longer. GOD will dwell with us.
Ezekiel chapter forty to the end of Ezekiel are the Millennial chapters. At the end of Ezekiel chapter forty, the final verse is where this chapter in Revelation begins. It’s after the Great White THRONE Judgment when the Eternity begins. The Eternity is the third and final age (the third Heaven and the third earth, which is known as the new Heaven and the new earth in this chapter). In Ezekiel chapter sixteen, GOD made a covenant with Jerusalem. It is HIS favorite place in the universe. That is where HE will dwell, and HIS people will dwell there with HIM.
Hosea 2:1 Say ye unto your brethren, Ammi; and to your sisters, Ruhamah.
Ezekiel 48:35 It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there.
]
Revelation 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
Revelation 21:5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
[
Note:
It is set. This will happen exactly as written.
]
Revelation 21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
Revelation 21:7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. G5207
[
Note:
Just as JESUS said to the woman at the well; if you drink of this water you will never thirst again. All who overcome satan will make the Eternity.
John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
The word “son” is not gender specific. It means child.
G5207
υἱός
uihos
hwee-os'
Apparently a primary word; a “son” (sometimes of animals), used very widely of immediate, remote or figurative kinship: - child, foal, son.
]
Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
[
Note:
Anyone who has done these things and repented is not in these categories. Their sin is wiped clean by THE BLOOD OF CHRIST. But remember, to repent means to turn towards GOD! Repent to GOD, knowing that by Faith and accepting that JESUS died for our sins, paying the price for our sins and redemming us back to HIM is why we can ask for forgiveness in HIS NAME!
The lake of fire is the second death. What does death mean? It means to be gone, not existing, blotted out. There is no place like hell as some preach where there is eternal torture. Hell is the grave. Going into the lake of fire means to never exist again.
]
Revelation 21:9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife.
Revelation 21:10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
Revelation 21:11 Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;
[
Note:
This city will sit on Mount Zion Jerusalem, which is GOD’S favorite place on earth (or in the universe). GOD covenanted with this geographical location as HIS favorite place in Ezekiel chapter sixteen. GOD is there. HIS presence will encompass the entire area. The light being like a jasper stone, clear as crystal means the light is pure. GOD IS PURE!
]
Revelation 21:12 And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:
Revelation 21:13 On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.
Revelation 21:14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
[
Note:
This makes me think that the Twenty-four Elders spoken of in Scripture are the twelve apostles and the fathers of the twelve tribes of Israel.
Ezekiel 48:30 And these are the goings out of the city on the north side, four thousand and five hundred measures.
Ezekiel 48:31 And the gates of the city shall be after the names of the tribes of Israel: three gates northward; one gate of Reuben, one gate of Judah, one gate of Levi.
Ezekiel 48:32 And at the east side four thousand and five hundred: and three gates; and one gate of Joseph, one gate of Benjamin, one gate of Dan.
Ezekiel 48:33 And at the south side four thousand and five hundred measures: and three gates; one gate of Simeon, one gate of Issachar, one gate of Zebulun.
Ezekiel 48:34 At the west side four thousand and five hundred, with their three gates; one gate of Gad, one gate of Asher, one gate of Naphtali.
Ezekiel 48:35 It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there.
]
Revelation 21:15 And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof.
Revelation 21:16 And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.
[
Note:
The city is in the shape of a cube. As of now, it would not fit in Jerusalem, but the new earth will not have oceans. At that time it will fit. Twelve thousand furlongs is equivalent to fifteen hundred miles. The height of it would extend far into space. Is it possible that these dimensions indicate influence?
Take a look at the following:
The 1,500 miles in height would extend far into space.
Comparison to Earth's Atmosphere and Space:
- The Kármán Line (commonly considered the boundary of space) is at 62 miles (100 km) above Earth.
- The International Space Station (ISS) orbits at around 250 miles.
- GPS satellites orbit at around 12,500 miles, so the New Jerusalem wouldn't reach them, but it would extend well into the thermosphere and exosphere.
Where Would 1,500 Miles Reach?
The exosphere, the outermost layer of Earth's atmosphere, extends from about 430 miles to 6,200 miles.
At 1,500 miles, the New Jerusalem would extend beyond the thermosphere and deep into the exosphere, where the atmosphere is extremely thin and merges with space.
The New Jerusalem’s height of 1,500 miles would extend far beyond the atmosphere and well into space, surpassing nearly all human-made satellites except for higher geostationary ones.
The 1,500-mile height of the New Jerusalem may be symbolic rather than literal, representing God's dominion, holiness, and presence rather than a physical architectural structure.
Symbolic Meaning of the Cube Shape:
1. Perfection and Completeness
- In the Bible, the cube is associated with Divine Perfection.
- The Holy of Holies in Solomon’s Temple was a perfect cube (1 Kings 6:20), signifying the dwelling place of God.
- The New Jerusalem, as a cube, may symbolize God’s eternal presence filling the city, a perfect dwelling place for His people.
2. God’s Infinite Influence
- The massive dimensions suggest God’s reign extends over all creation.
- It could represent spiritual authority rather than physical measurements, reaching not just Earth but into the heavens.
Why Would It Be So Tall?
- If taken literally, a 1,500-mile-high city would reach deep into space, which seems unnecessary for a physical habitation.
- Instead, this height could symbolize God’s supreme rule over heaven and earth.
- The New Jerusalem is described as descending from heaven (Revelation 21:2), possibly indicating it is not bound by earthly constraints.
Spiritual Interpretation
Rather than a city designed for physical living with skyscraper-like floors, its gigantic dimensions might emphasize its divine nature, majesty, and influence.
The New Jerusalem is ultimately a Spiritual reality the dwelling of God with man (Revelation 21:3) where there is no need for the sun or temple because God’s glory fills it (Revelation 21:23).
Conclusion
The cube shape and immense height likely serve as symbolic imagery for:
God’s perfect presence
The city’s divine authority extending into the heavens.
The unlimited nature of eternal life in God’s kingdom.
The height could symbolize its influence rather than a literal towering structure, much like how other apocalyptic visions use grand, symbolic imagery to convey SPIRITUAL TRUTHS.
It's also possible that we cannot comprehend with our limited minds what it will be like to dwell in the place where GOD dwells.
Dimensions and emphasis on Light may be something far beyond what we are accustomed to in this three dimensional space we live in. What we are in for could be something that our minds are not capable of envisioning in our current state in these flesh bodies and we may not realize the MAGNIFICENCE of what will be our new Home until we enter in for the first time.

Revelation 21:17 And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.
Revelation 21:18 And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.
[
Note:
Angels are men, but just not in flesh bodies. When this age is over, all people will be in spirit bodies, that is, angels. The jasper and pure gold, like unto clear glass means purity. Nothing is hidden, it is all pure.
]
Revelation 21:19 And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald;
Revelation 21:20 The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst.
[
Note:
The foundations of the walls are patterned after a priest’s breastplate as shown by the comparison of a priest’s breastplate as written in Exodus 28, verses 17 to 21:
Exodus 28:17 And thou shalt set in it settings of stones, even four rows of stones: the first row shall be a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle: this shall be the first row.
Exodus 28:18 And the second row shall be an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond.
Exodus 28:19 And the third row a ligure, an agate, and an amethyst.
Exodus 28:20 And the fourth row a beryl, and an onyx, and a jasper: they shall be set in gold in their inclosings.
Exodus 28:21 And the stones shall be with the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet; every one with his name shall they be according to the twelve tribes.
Keep in mind that Revelation is translated from Greek, whereas Exodus is translated from Hebrew. For a deeper explanation, look up the original Manuscript words using the Strong’s Concordance.
]
Revelation 21:21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
[
Note:
The emphasis is on the purity of the city. There won’t be anything there that offends.
]
Revelation 21:22 And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.
Revelation 21:23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
Revelation 21:24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.
Revelation 21:25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.
Revelation 21:26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.
Revelation 21:27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.
[
Note:
GOD and JESUS will be there as ONE with all of the people within the city, and will be The Temple Of GOD. And all the nations of the earth will be able to come there to worship, and there will never be a tear shed again.
