Genealogy Of JESUS CHRIST By Law (or In-law) Of Joseph: Mary’s Genealogy, And The Genealogy Of Joseph

Preface

There is much debate between scholars regarding the genealogy of JESUS CHRIST as given in Matthew chapter one and Luke chapter three.

This difference is that Luke chapter three has many more names listed in the genealogy between king David of Israel and JESUS CHRIST than that of Matthew chapter one.

Another difference is that the genealogy in Matthew shows that the seedline continues after king David through Solomon, whereas in Luke the genealogy continues through Nathan. Therefore, we can see that Joseph came through Solomon, whereas Mary came through Nathan.

It is therefore not possible for both genealogies to be  the correct genealogy of JESUS CHRIST with the information given. As usual, when there is a  discrepancy of understanding in Scripture, the lack of understanding is always on the side of man and there is no discrepancy at all.

Reasons given by scholars as possible explanations for the differences are that Matthew may contain only the royalty names or that the names tell a story, therefore only specific names are given in order to facilitate that story.

While there may be reasons as mentioned above that the length of the genealogy in Matthew is not the same as the length of the genealogy in Luke, the evidence shows that the genealogy in Matthew is that of Joseph, and his genealogy has nothing to do with the genealogy of JESUS CHRIST.
Luke chapter three on the other hand, as explained below is the genealogy of JESUS CHRIST through Mary.

The Genealogy Of JESUS CHRIST Through Mary
(Luke 3:23 through Luke 3:38)

[
Note: The use of “son of” with respect to the seedline of CHRIST in Luke chapter three is due to the fact that the genealogy of JESUS CHRIST through Mary is from Joseph’s perspective, therefore since Joseph’s perspective is by law (or in-law), “son of” would be used instead of begat.

Mary’s relatives are in-laws of Joseph, therefore appropriate use of “son of” is applied. Said again below for emphasis because to understand is what is important: It was customary at that time to list genealogies through the husband. Therefore, Mary's genealogy would be give from Joseph's perspective but it is the "in-laws" that would be listed that would lead to Mary.
]

Luke 3:23  And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) G3543 the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,

G3543
νομίζω
nomizō
nom id' zo
From G3551; properly to do by law (usage), that is, to accustom (passively be usual); by extension to deem or regard:  suppose, think, be wont.

[
Note: It was customary at the time of the Birth of JESUS CHRIST to list genealogies of families through or by way of the father (or husband) even when the genealogy was of the mother (or wife).

The genealogy of JESUS CHRIST in Luke chapter three is given as by law (or in-law) of Joseph, but through the actual seedline of Mary.

This is done by custom.

If we were to write the verse above (Luke 3:23) in a modern, more readily understood context for the modern reader, it would be written as follows: “And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being by law the son of Joseph, which was the son in law of Heli,”.

The seedline to JESUS CHRIST as referenced to Joseph’s genealogy at the point at which Joseph was betrothed to Mary is given in Matthew chapter one, with the exceptions in understanding as given in the preface, meaning that the genealogy listed in Mattew chapter one is the genealogy of Joseph upto the point at which Joseph and Mary were betrothed to each other. But the actual genealogy of JESUS CHRIST must come from the seed line of Mary, and the actual genealogy of JESUS CHRIST is listed by custom of "in-laws" of Joseph (Mary's actual genealogy) in Luke, chapter three.

[
Note:
So, we can see that Mary comes through Nathan (not Solomon), which was the son of David.

The Generations Of Joseph To JESUS CHRIST
(Matthew 1:1  through Matthew 1:17)

Matthew 1:1  The book of the generation G1078 of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

G1078
γένεσις
genesis
ghen' es is
From the same as G1074; nativity; figuratively nature:  generation, nature (ral).

Matthew 1:2  Abraham begat G1080 Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;

G1080
γεννάω
gennaō
ghen nah' o
From a variation of G1085; to procreate (properly of the father, but by extension of the mother); figuratively to regenerate:  bear, beget, be born, bring forth, conceive, be delivered of, gender, make, spring.

[
Note: Begat means by procreation, which means by actual father and mother. The generations listed here are the actual seed line to the generation of JESUS CHRIST up to, but not through Joseph. Notice that Joseph’s genealogy is listed for completeness even though the seedline to CHRIST did not come through Joseph. The word “begat” is used because this is Joseph’s actual seedline.
]

Matthew 1:3  And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;

Matthew 1:4  And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon;

Matthew 1:5  And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;

Matthew 1:6  And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;

[
Note:
While Nathan and Solomon were both sons of David through David's union with Bathsheba (also known as  Bathshua the daughter of Ammiel), Mary's seed line is through Nathan, whereas Joseph's seed line is through Solomon.
]

Matthew 1:7  And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;

Matthew 1:8  And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;

Matthew 1:9  And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;

Matthew 1:10  And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias;

Matthew 1:11  And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:

Matthew 1:12  And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;

Matthew 1:13  And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;

Matthew 1:14  And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;

Matthew 1:15  And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;

Matthew 1:16  And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

[
Note:
JESUS was born of Mary, the wife of Joseph. But Joseph, the husband of Mary is not listed as the father of JESUS. The FATHER Of JESUS is shown, in Scripture to be ALMIGHTY GOD, as the angel Gabriel had said to her when the angel was sent to Mary to tell her this Good News!

(Isaiah 7:10)  Moreover the LORD spake again unto Ahaz, saying,
(Isaiah 7:11)  Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.
(Isaiah 7:12)  But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the LORD.
(Isaiah 7:13)  And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also?
(Isaiah 7:14)  Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
(Isaiah 7:15)  Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.
(Isaiah 7:16)  For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of both her kings.
(Isaiah 7:17)  The LORD shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father's house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria.
(Isaiah 7:18)  And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall hiss for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.
(Isaiah 7:19)  And they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the desolate valleys, and in the holes of the rocks, and upon all thorns, and upon all bushes.
(Isaiah 7:20)  In the same day shall the Lord shave with a razor that is hired, namely, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria, the head, and the hair of the feet: and it shall also consume the beard.
(Isaiah 7:21)  And it shall come to pass in that day, that a man shall nourish a young cow, and two sheep;
(Isaiah 7:22)  And it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk that they shall give he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the land.
(Isaiah 7:23)  And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place shall be, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, it shall even be for briers and thorns.
(Isaiah 7:24)  With arrows and with bows shall men come thither; because all the land shall become briers and thorns.
(Isaiah 7:25)  And on all hills that shall be digged with the mattock, there shall not come thither the fear of briers and thorns: but it shall be for the sending forth of oxen, and for the treading of lesser cattle.

(Isaiah 53:1)  Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
(Isaiah 53:2)  For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
(Isaiah 53:3)  He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
(Isaiah 53:4)  Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
(Isaiah 53:5)  But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
(Isaiah 53:6)  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
(Isaiah 53:7)  He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
(Isaiah 53:8)  He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
(Isaiah 53:9)  And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
(Isaiah 53:10)  Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
(Isaiah 53:11)  He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
(Isaiah 53:12)  Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

(Matthew 1:18)  Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
(Matthew 1:19)  Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.
(Matthew 1:20)  But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
(Matthew 1:21)  And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
(Matthew 1:22)  Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
(Matthew 1:23)  Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
(Matthew 1:24)  Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
(Matthew 1:25)  And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

(Luke 1:26)  And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
(Luke 1:27)  To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
(Luke 1:28)  And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
(Luke 1:29)  And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
(Luke 1:30)  And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
(Luke 1:31)  And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
(Luke 1:32)  He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
(Luke 1:33)  And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
(Luke 1:34)  Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
(Luke 1:35)  And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
(Luke 1:36)  And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
(Luke 1:37)  For with God nothing shall be impossible.
(Luke 1:38)  And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
]

Matthew 1:17  So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.
